As the fall semester is approaching, and has in fact already started in many schools, ShowMe comes with a surprise-update for its users. The long-awaited and demanded voice re-recording tool is now available. You can access this and many more by updating ShowMe to the latest version on iTunes. Read on to learn about the details of the update.
You can now make edits to the audio part of the ShowMe before uploading it. The tools are very intuitive! Once finished recording your ShowMe, choose to save the ShowMe as complete and proceed to the review screen. Get to the point where you want to start re-recording and press the microphone icon.
When you press the microphone, the video pauses, you see a 3 second countdown that allows you to prepare, after which the re-recording begins!
You can see the re-recorded segment on the top bar and may press the red “STOP” icon to stop the audio re-recording.
Additionally, you can re-record the audio of already uploaded ShowMes! Just open the ShowMe file and do the same steps described above! After you are done with editing, you will be asked whether to save the edited version as a copy or update the original ShowMe.
Along with manually inviting group members, now the group owner can share a group code which can be used to join the group. Each group has a unique group code which is available only to the group owner. The group owner can find it at the group page.
Users given the group code can join the group by tapping the “Join a Group” button and entering the group code in the popup message.

Upon opening the app the user is taken through a set of guided instructions that help you understand the application and its interface. Although it is an option we recommend that you create an account to truly appreciate the capabilities of this app.
A simple press of the record button and you are creating your first ShowMe presentation. The tools here are adequate with the ability to use text, colour, add images and an eraser. This can be somewhat limited and sometimes the presentations created are only as good as the presenter or artist, more tools are available through the premium service. The app could benefit from a clip art tool here. The presentation can be enhanced by using the voice over feature to explain your thoughts as you present and draw. Once the ShowMe presentation has been created you can save this as a draft, for further editing, or a finished presentation. We found the app slightly frustrating that once saved it then asks you to add to a topic for others to access and posts the presentation, you can only save this privately if you sign up for the premium service. However, what we need to stress is the potential of this app has to engage teaching and learning. As a teacher if you are planning a lesson keep in mind its versatility and potential for homework tasks and flipped-class applications. A maths problem solved by a teacher can be played back by the student time and time again in class and at home. This has great potential for parents to learn the topic as well.
The developers can be congratulated on the potential that ShowMe has to offer for both teaching and learning. The online ShowMe community has embraced this application and teachers from all over the globe are sharing presentations. This is a fantastic app that comes highly recommended by the Educational App Store.
Metric Conversions: Mr. Black put together a great ShowMe explaining conversions in the metric system. It’s worth sending to any student who are having trouble understanding!
Stepping Up in ShowMe: L Homgren created an awesome ShowMe on how to optimize ShowMe. For anyone trying to incorporate ShowMe into the classroom, this one is a must see!
Along rivers: Robert put together an amazing ShowMe on why early civilizations formed along rivers. “Along rivers” is definitely one of the better ShowMe’s we’ve ever seen, so give it a watch if you have a minute!
U-sub demo: Daniel goes through u-substitution in an extremely clear way. For any students or teachers of calculus having trouble with u-substitution, this ShowMe is definitely worth taking a look at!
We’re excited to present today our first ShowMe Featured User! Meet Joe Erpelding, a principal/teacher in California who has created several awesome math ShowMes including one of our personal favorites, Compare and Order Whole Numbers.
Visit Joe’s awesome ShowMe Portfolio: http://www.showmeapp.com/user5377
Can you tell us a little about what you do?
I’m a principal at an elementary school in California. I also teach math there.
How are you and the teachers at your school using ShowMe?
I really like the idea of having two people talk to each other during a ShowMe. My son is usually with me in my videos, and he and I can talk about common misconceptions people have. Right now we’ve only made videos about math, but we hope to create some science lessons soon.
Other teachers at our school plan on using ShowMe to implement a partially flipped classroom starting next year. The lessons will be level specific instead of grade specific. We’ll start pushing out more content around August in preparation for school.
What’s the coolest ShowMe you’ve seen?
I’ve seen a lot of math ones, but I get really excited about science ones. I also really liked the sports strategy ShowMes.

In other news, we had an awesome time mingling with teachers at ISTE 2011. For those unfamiliar with the conference, ISTE brings together thousands of enthusiastic ed tech professionals and corporate representatives from around the world for five days of professional learning, collaboration, and hands-on demonstration of new technologies for the classroom.
We were pleasantly surprised to see one of the ISTE attendees demoing the app 🙂
This is only the beginning for ShowMe and our amazing group of content contributors. Hang tight, there are many more exciting things to come!
